How are Custom-Fitted Mouthguards Made?

 

Getting a custom-fitted mouthguard made is simple. All you need to do is make an appointment. At your initial consultation, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth using a mould. Each mouthguard is custom-made to match your teeth, so you don’t need to worry about it ever falling out. The mouthguard will fit lightly and comfortably. You probably won’t even realise that you’re wearing it!

 

If you would like your mouthguard customised in any way, speak to your dentist about this during your initial consultation. They’ll be more than happy to talk through your options with you.

 

Around a week or so later, your mouthguard will be ready. When you return to collect it, we’ll check that it fits you correctly. We will also provide you with a protective case and a list of care instructions.

 

Why are these Better than Other Forms of Mouthguard?

Custom-fitted mouthguards have several advantages over the other forms of mouthguard available. For example, many of the mouthguards in sports stores are only available in set sizes, such as small, medium and large. For this reason, they often do not fit correctly. They’re also bulky and are only held in place by constant biting down, which means that they make speaking and breathing far more difficult.

Similarly ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards lack proper extensions and do not cover the posterior teeth. Due to the poor fit, the amount of protection offered is minimal and the chance of injury caused by a blow to the chin is still high.

 

For this reason, we do not recommend either of these forms of mouthguards and we believe that custom-fitted mouthguards are the best and safest solution for your teeth and health.
