As expert general dentistry practitioners, we also understand that sometimes people get nervous before they visit us and during their treatment. This is nothing to worry about and is completely understandable.

With our expert team, you’re in safe hands. We’ll always explain what we’re doing and why it’s necessary. We also keep you involved in all treatment decisions. If you find that you’re still nervous, we’ll happily provide nitrous oxide or ‘happy gas’ to help you get through your treatment.

What is a General Dentist?

A general dentist is your primary care provider. People generally just refer to their general dentist as their dentist.

Your general dentist will do all of your check-ups, diagnose any problems with your oral health, treat any problems they have diagnosed and manage your overall oral health needs. This includes everything that relates to the health of your mouth, including your gums and root canals.

Your dentist will also manage any treatments they have provided for you or you’ve had fitted previously, such as crowns or fillings.

They’re also responsible for helping to educate you on the importance of a good oral health routine, so they may ask you about your routine and offer preventive education to stop problems from occurring in the future.

Although a general dentist will perform a number of treatments and services, you may need to see a specialist dentist for some services, such as an orthodontist for the fitting of braces.

How Often Do I Need to see a Dentist?

How often you see the dentist will depend on the health of your teeth and the current state of any repair work you’ve had done. However, generally speaking, most patients will visit the dentist every six months. For these appointments, your dentist will ask you a number of questions about your oral health and whether you have noticed any changes since your last visit, such as pain or increased sensitivity.

After this, they will perform a thorough inspection of your mouth and teeth in order to accurately assess your oral health. They will also professionally clean your teeth for you, if you like.

Depending on their assessment, your dentist may also take x-rays that will allow them to assess areas they cannot inspect during the check-up. This is completely normal and is nothing to worry about. Following this, they’ll have a brief chat with you about their findings, including whether you may need any work doing and when you should make your next appointment for.

If you’re concerned about a check-up, there are a number of ways that you can prepare for your dental visit that will help to put your mind at ease.

Red Toothbrush

As time goes on, you may find that your pearly whites aren’t as bright as they once were. That’s because, as we consume foods and drinks, our teeth become stained. If you’d like a bit of extra brightness in your teeth, then teeth whitening is an excellent and effective way of improving the colour of your teeth.
